Love Your Enemies

To you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you. Luke 6: 27-28

An enemy is someone who threatens you, attacks you, or tries to harm you. When someone hurts us or wrongs us in some way we tend to wan to to get back at them. Repay evil with evil is the wrong thing to do. We should never seek revenge!

David had an enemy named Saul and Saul wanted to kill him. Saul was told David had gone into the wilderness of En-gedi. So Saul and three thousand of his elite troops went to search for David. Saul went into a cave to relieve himself having no idea David and his men were hiding farther back in that very cave.

"Now's your opportunity!" David's men whispered to him. Father than killing him David crept forward and cut off a piece of the hem of Saul's robe. In doing so David's conscience began bothering him. The Lord forbid that I should do this to my lord the king and attack the Lord's anointed one, for the Lord himself has chosen him.

There is so much violence in the world and I often wonder if it is because someone is egging them on. Maybe there are those who say, "Now is your opportunity." When we repay evil with evil it will weigh heavy on our conscience because we know better.

Vengeance is mine says the Lord. Don't take matters into your own hands. This is an opportunity to let your Father seek justice on your behalf. We know what the right thing to do is; let's do that. Love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you.

David knew that the Lord forbid him to attack Saul who was anointed and chosen by God. Just as we know it is forbidden to attack those who have wronged us or hurt us in any way. Why? The same reason: All of us have been called and chosen by God. We are all His children so let's treat each other as if they are our brothers and sisters because they are. We need to lift each other up not tear each other down.
