Hearing From the Lord

Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known. Jeremiah 33:3 (ESV)

A few days ago I read from a book "The 40-Day Feast" written by Wendy Speake. Did You Come To Hear From the Lord? This daily devotional really stood out to me. We all want to hear from the Lord. On occasion I pray before reading the word, but this is something we should do at all times.

Often times we pray and wait to hear from the Lord. We know He hears us and answers our prayers, but here are times we don't hear from Him right away. Are we asking Him to tell us great and hidden things? Maybe not in so many words. I think we just expect Him to answer us. This verse tells us that He will tell us great and hidden things that we do not know. All we need to do is call out to Him in prayer and ask for Him to speak to us through His Word. Sometimes He will surprise us and answer through a vision or a dream. Other times He will whisper the answer in our ear.

Here are three questions from her book to ask yourself.

Do you ask God to open the Scriptures to you before you open them up yourself?

Do you open God's Word expecting Him to speak directly to your heart and into your life circumstances?

Do you anticipate that He's going to communicate something intimate and applicable that you need to know to live this life with Him and for Him when you open you Bible? If you come to God with an open heart, He most certainly will.

"My hope is this devotion is to inspire you to develop a pre-Bible-reading routine, one that helps you ready your heart for an encounter with God."- Wendy Speake

I have been inspired by her and wrote out my own personal prayer which I laid on top of my Bible as a reminder to pray before reading the Word.

Father God,

Open the Scriptures of Your Word and illuminate (show me) the words You want to reveal to me. I am hungry for Your Word that always satisfies. As I wait with expectation speak to my heart and into my life. As I come to You with an open heart tell me something intimate and applicable. Open my ears to hear, my eyes to see, my mind to comprehend, and my heart to understand. Lord tell me great and hidden things that I have not known.

In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
